Here are the results of  the 400-yard bulls eye match held November 13 at the club range.

Conditions were very good for shooting.  We had our 3rd perfect score of the year. Club members Tom Hamilton and Bob Huston closed out the year with wins.

Joe Reffner from Juniata Valley shot a perfect 50/50 in the very first relay. Forty targets were shot today.

Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order by Jeremy Smith at 7:30 p.m. on November 12th, 2011.

The October minutes were presented by Randy Mitchell and were approved on a motion by Joel Dutra and a second by Marty Hrin. The treasurer’s report was approved on a motion by Don O’Dell and a second by Tom Noble.

Old Business

The gun raffle tickets for the coming year were distributed to the member. Any member who did not receive tickets to sell can get tickets from Joel Dutra, Randy Mitchell or George McCoy.

The remodeling supplies have been delivered and the installation of the new windows will start tomorrow.

The tickets for the members only drawing are available from Walt Kuzemchock. This year’s members only prize is a Remington 700 LSS in any of 7 calibers.

The trap thrower has been removed from the trap house and stored in the clubhouse for the winter

New Business

Marty Hrin made a motion to have Randy Mitchell purchase more fuel oil for the furnace for the winter.

The water for the clubhouse needs to be shut off and drained for the winter. Jeremy Smith will contact Scott Brubaker to arrange to have this done.

Members are reminded to get raffle tickets and sell them to benefit the club.

George McCoy won the 50/50 drawing.

Old Business
It was reported that the Chukar Hunt had miserable weather, it was a fun day and money was made.

Report on pheasant hunt, thanks for the dogs and handlers,  a little warm, kids had fun.

The trap thrower should be pulled before the next meeting.

The new windows are to be done before winter.

Just a man and his new muzzle loader

My wife and kids got me everything to go in-line muzzle loader hunting for my birthday, I have been talking about getting one for some time now. I went up to the club and tried 2 different bullets and had the rifle sighted in for 100 yards and was ready for the first day of the season. What I wasn't ready for, was the "first day of muzzle loader season"!

We woke up, at camp on Saturday morning to find there were hurricane force winds and almost enough rain to float and ark, yet we still went out. We saw several deer during the day.   Unfortunately they were either a half-mile away or traveling at mach 1 as they went by us. You would think that after having to go back to camp and dry off three times during the day, we would have enough sense to stay in.   We didn't.

I got back in my stand at 5 o'clock and settled in for the rest of the day. At 5:15 I saw a doe at 125 yards, standing broadside. I put the crosshairs on the deer and pulled the trigger, my rifle went "pffft". I fumbled around and got another primer in, the deer was still standing broadside, and I pulled the trigger again.  This time it went "pffft - wosh - bloop", and I watched the bullet fall out of the end of the barrel.   The deer was still broadside.

I took out the breech plug and looked down the barrel to make sure there was nothing in it. What I saw was the deer standing broadside. Now I am in full panic mode! I reloaded the gun, put in a primer, put the cross hairs on a still-standing broadside deer and pulled the trigger. The rifle worked flawlessly, and after the smoke cleared I got to see the tail of the deer waving goodbye as it ran into the woods.

You would think I should have been able to stay calm after all that happened, I wasn 't!  My son explained to me, as he was laughing, that black powder does not like wet weather. I know this now.  But I reminded myself that, "A bad day of huntin' is still better than a good day of workin'!"

Steve Strouse, Linda Solida (twice) and Tom Hamilton win top honors in Oct. 9 400-yard deer rifle match

Member Steve Strouse on a hot streak!

After winning the 200-yard Benchrest match, on Sept. 17, Steve fired a perfect 25 score on Oct. 9 in the 400-yard deer rifle Unlimited class to take top honors two matches in a row. The day was as perfect as you could get, with no wind and great temperatures. We shot 31 targets.

Linda Solida continued her own hot streak  by shooting two winning scores in the Factory Heavy Barrel class, tying Tom Hamilton for the top spot in that category.  Linda's husband, Mike Solida, shot two runner-up scores in the Unlimited class.

We have one more 400 -yard match, on round targets, on Nov. 13.   The three  classes are 30 caliber, 22 caliber and everything else.

This match has unlimited sighters.  We encourage all members to come out, fine-tune your rifle for deer season, eat good food (venison chili and corn bread muffins) and have a great time.

Steve Strouse and Bob Houson win 200-yard IBS matches

Steve Strouse and Bob Houson won top honors in the 200-yard IBS benchrest rifle matches held September 17 at Anderson Creek Sportrsmen's Club.  Strouse also took third place in the factory class.

Youth pheasant hunt scheduled Saturday, Oct. 8

Marty Hin reports that there will be a Youth Pheasant hunt on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Volunteers are needed as mentors or to supply dogs for the hunt.

Anybody who knows of any kids who are interested in participating should contact Marty for more information. The hunt is open to youth between the age of 12 and 16.  Those who wish to participate must have completed the hunter safety training education.

Old Business
It was reported that the water pump has been checked and it is ok, the loss of water was probably due to low water in the well.

Andy Shaffer reported that the tractor brakes are now working.

Tom Noble reminded the members that the Chukar Hunt will be held on October 2^nd. Anybody planning on attending must contact Tom by 9/27 so he can order the steaks. The cost for the Chukar Hunt and Steak Feed is $160.00 for a group of 4 hunters.

Jeremy gave the match report and the results are posted on the web site.

Randy Mitchell reported that 32 letters were sent to members regarding the recent damage to the target holders.

Marty Hrin reported that there will be a Youth Pheasant Hunt on October 8^th and that he needs volunteers as mentors or to supply dogs for the hunt. Anybody who knows of any kids who are interested in participating should contact Marty for more information. New Business
Jeremy Smith made a motion to buy 2.5 gallons of Roundup to spray on the field prior to winter. The motion passed on a Nick Prave second.

Don O’Dell volunteered to look for a new metal door for the trap house.

Of Special Note: The meeting was 18 minutes long shattering the previous record of 22 minutes held by Tom Hamilton.

Solida family dominates 400-yard deer rifle match

  This was probably the best conditions for a match that we have ever had.  Cool temps and very light winds.  Unlimited class had a 3-way tie for first with 3 fellows shooting 23 out of 25.  Member Mike Solida, his wife Linda and his son Alan all finished very well today.  Mike tied for 1st in the Unlimited class, Linda won the Factory Heavy Barrel and Alan took 3rd in the same class.  There were 41 targets shot today.

Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order by Jimmy Johnston at 7:30 p.m. on August 13^th, 2011

The July minutes were presented by Randy Mitchell and were approved with one correction on a motion by Andy Shaffer and a second by Roger Thomas. The treasurer’s report was approved on a motion by Marty Hrin and a second by Nick Prave.

Old Business
Marty Hrin reminded members that the PWHU annual picnic will be August 21^st and tickets are available from Marty. Jimmy Johnston and Walt Kuzemchock reported on the recent matches and the results are posted on the web site.

Tom Noble reported that the trap shoot went very well with 10 shooters participating. Steve McClure and Jeremy Smith worked on the new trap thrower and it worked very well after some adjustments. Biodegradable birds do not work very well in the thrower. Tom Noble reported that there will be a Chukar hunt on October 2^nd and the cost is $160.00 for a group of 2 to 4 shooters.

New Business
Tom Hamilton reported that shooters have been shooting the target holder boards at the 400 yard range. Tom drafted a letter to the members bringing attention to this issue and made a motion that the letter be sent to all members not in attendance at the meeting. The motion passed on a Marty Hrin second and Randy Mitchell will send the letter to the members.

Tom Noble said the pump for the water well is not working and the well may be low. Several members volunteered to check the well and pump. The golf cart was serviced by Steve Strouse. The old mower needs charged and should be ran to make sure it is operating. Tom Noble made a motion that we rent a porta-potty through the end of November and the motion passed on a Scott Brubaker second.

Andy Shaffer found that the tractor brakes are not working and he will contact Bob Knisely to see if he can diagnose and repair the problem. Tom Hamilton made a motion to provide up to $800.00 for the repair of the front wall of the camp and 2 new windows. The motion passed on a Walt Kuzemchock second. Marty Hrin reported that there will be a Youth Pheasant Hunt on October 8^th and that he needs volunteers as mentors or to supply dogs for the hunt. Trap shoot and steak feed scheduled for August 7

The trap shoot and steak feed on Sunday, August 7, will be starting around 10:00 a.m.

The cost is $25.00 for three rounds of trap and a steak dinner.

Important reminder regarding 400-yard range

Members and guest at not to put targets, of any type, behind, against, in front of, under or above the 400 yard target frames.

Someone in the last week put clay birds behind the frames and there now are several new bullet holes in the cross beams.

These frames, and the area around them, are for the matches only! There is plenty of space at the practice side to shoot.

Alcohol Policy By-Law Amendment

1. All Pennsylvania laws related to the possession and use of controlled substances on Anderson Creek Sportsmen’s Club property will be strictly obeyed.

2. Shooting ranges will be alcohol free when the ranges are in use. Shooters must refrain from alcohol use before and during all shooting. That person in charge of the range at that time has the right to determine whether this rule has been violated, and to prevent the violator from participating.

3. The member or members who reserved the Club are fully responsible for all in attendance to follow the rules regarding alcohol use on club property. Any Violations will result in the immediate expulsion of the member or members who have reserved the club and are in charge at the time of the rules violation.

4. The Anderson Creek Sportsmen’s Club being used by non-members shall be alcohol free, unless there is at least one member responsible, at which time all rules of alcohol use and possession shall be followed.

5. All rules, infractions and punishment shall be dealt with in accordance to Article 1, Section 3 of the Anderson Creek Sportsmen’s Club by-laws.

July 9^th, 2011

Meeting was called to order by Jeremy Smith at 7:30 p.m. on July 9^th, 2011

The June minutes were presented by Randy Mitchell and were approved as read on a motion by Roger Thomas  and a second Tom Noble. The treasurer’s report was approved on a motion by Marty Hrin and a second by Bud Thomas.

Old Business
Tom Noble reported that the new thrower worked very well after some adjustments. The birds that were stored in the thrower pit drew damp and did not work very well in the thrower.  It was decided that the birds will now be stored in the lawn mower shed. The lawn mower was moved to the golf cart shed.  Instructions for operating the new thrower are posted on the door of the pit, and should be carefully followed to avoid any injuries.

Jeremy Smith reported on the 22 match. Walt Kuzemchock reported on the 400 yard match. The next 22 match will be on July 24^th.

Club Note:

Nancy took the rifle from him and proceeded to clean up in her class. Maybe John ought to let Nancy wear the shooting pants in their family.

Matt Hamilton promoted to captain

Matt Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Captain on June 30 at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Captain Hamilton is a 2004 graduate of the Curwensville Area School System and a 2008 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Pictured with Captain Hamilton is Captain Kaiser, Cpt. Hamilton, his son, Gunner, and his wife Jessica.

Matt is the son of Tom and Karen Hamilton of Curwensville.

Captain Hamilton  is a SRT (Special Reaction Team) leader in the MP's, the Army's version of SWAT and will be stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas after completion of the Captains Career Course in September.

Sunday hunting assigned a bill number in Pennsylvania

Sunday hunting legislation has been assigned a bill number in Pennsylvania.  House Bill 1760 is sponsored by state Representative John Evans (R-5).

The prohibition on Sunday hunting is an old blue law left on the books in just a handful of states. Hunters pump millions of dollars into habitat restoration and conservation and they are primarily responsible for healthy ecosystems throughout Pennsylvania.

Many hunters cannot introduce their children or friends to hunting because Saturday is their only opportunity, and they are competing with the numerous organized sports and other activities. The addition of an extra day in the field increases a person’s available time to enjoy our hunting heritage. This will invigorate essential hunter recruitment and retention efforts. Sunday hunting will also bring a much-needed economic boost to rural areas.

Fishing's great at the club pond

I took some of my family up to the club recently to fish and have a picnic. Fishing in our pond is great! The first picture is my grandson, Benjamin, with my daughter Melissa, catching his first fish. Ben was so excited that he caught it all by himself, he was shaking.

I do suggest you take medium tackle when you go to fish there, as you can see by the second picture we have some very good sized large mouth bass in the pond. I hooked a bigger one earlier and the fish broke my lighter set up. All the fishing was done off the boat dock, I'm sure there are bigger fish around the pond.

Gov. Corbett sings Castle Doctrine bill into law

Gov. Tom Corbett has signed Pennsylvania Castle Doctrine legislation into law. This common-sense measure permits law-abiding citizens to use force, including deadly force, against an attacker in their home and any place where they have a legal right to be. It also protects individuals from civil lawsuits by an attacker or attacker’s family when force is used.

Gov. Corbett and Pennsylvania lawmakers know that law-abiding citizens must have the right to protect themselves when criminals attack without fear of being second-guessed by an overzealous prosecutor,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director, National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action. “Crime victims don’t have the luxury of time when confronted by a criminal and must be able to count on the law being on their side. This new law accomplishes that by removing any mandate of forcible retreat.”
